The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started raiding the homes of former government officials in charge of a project to award 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme.
"Some places connected to some persons involved in the case under investigation by the ACC over 4,000 flats awarded in the Gedhoruveriya scheme are being searched under a court order," an ACC official told Adhadhu.
ACC has raided the home of former State Minister for Housing Akram Kamaluddin, Adhadhu understands. Adhadhu has also learned that the ACC seized his phone and some electronic equipment.
In addition, ACC investigators are searching the homes of Lirqam Waheed, Mohamed Arif and Ahmed Wisan Naseem, all of whom had been involved in managing the Gedhoruveriya scheme.
According to the ACC, the percentage of application forms from the final list of recipients that had been found to be eligible without any problems was 20.7 percent. The percentage of forms that met the criteria but contained problems was 19.7 percent.
A provisional list of recipients deemed eligible for flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme released on August 8 last year included 15,046 people. The government decided to award flats to all eligible applicants. However, construction had only started on 4,000 flats at the time.
After the government decided to hand over the first 4,000 flats to applicants who scored the highest points, ACC ordered a halt to the process in relation to a complaint submitted to the commission. The commission authorised the process to resume on February 1 after conducting an investigation upon securing access to a portal created for the scheme.
