The government has decided to dismiss Ahmed Sareer, the Maldivian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, following his refusal to join the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
A senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to Adhadhu that the decision to remove Sareer from his post was directly linked to his refusal to sign with the PNC.
Sareer is one of the most seasoned diplomats currently serving the Maldives. His career in the foreign service spans nearly 40 years, beginning in 1986. He has previously served as the Maldivian Ambassador to both the United States and Bangladesh.
In addition to those roles, Sareer served as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations. He has also held the position of Deputy Ambassador in the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka and served as the Head of Mission for the Maldives in Brussels.
Adhadhu understands that the government has instructed all Maldivian ambassadors and diplomats to join the PNC. This directive includes several career civil servants and long-standing officials who have historically maintained neutrality and never participated in political activities.
