Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has handed over the symbolic keys to the 4000 Gedhoruveriya (House owner) flats to President Mohamed Muizzu.
The Gedhoruveriya project was launched during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih with Indian government assistance.
The housing units were completed and the symbolic keys were officially handed over during a ceremony at the President's Office on Friday evening.
The project was launched in 2021 with a loan from Exim Bank of India. The government is now signing agreements with the flat recipients.
Under the housing project, 1,200 two-bedroom units and 2,800 three-bedroom units were built in Hulhumale' Phase 2.
Modi also inaugurated the Addu road construction project and other construction projects in some islands during his two-day state visit to the Maldives.
The Indian government further announced the donation of 72 heavy vehicles to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
