Fahi Union has alleged that the names of some of the 4,000 flat recipients of the Gedhoruveriya scheme are being removed through lies, fraud and deception to "sell" their flats to gain undue profit.
In a statement issued on Friday, the association said that a person who has never held any civil service job was removed from the flat list after claiming that he worked in a school in Thaa atoll from August 2012 to 2017.
The Infrastructure Ministry disqualified the person after saying that they were not able to prove residency in Male' for 15 consecutive years.
The person wrote to the Civil Service Commission and the Pension Office and was informed that there is no record of employment in the civil service.
“We believe that the purpose of a government ministry trying to unfairly seize flats from many poor people is to sell their flats and use them for illegal financial gain,” the statement read.
It added that several people have informed the association that representative of the Housing Ministry are constantly trying to extort money by offering to sell flats.
“Fahi Union condemns the unfair attempts to seize the flats of many people to seek illegal benefits,” the association said.
"All the above matters have been brought to the attention of the President on behalf of the Union."
The government has said that the flats will be given to the list announced during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Infrastructure Minister Abdullah Muththalib said on May 30 that 4,000 flats would be handed over starting in July.
However, no flats have been handed over so far.
