Maldives Customs Service has intercepted an individual attempting to illegally smuggle foreign currency worth approximately MVR 900,000 out of the country.

According to Customs, the individual apprehended at Velana International Airport (VIA) is an Indian national. Authorities reported that he was in possession of various foreign currencies totalling MVR 905,669.

Under Maldivian law, any amount exceeding $10,000 must be declared before being taken out of the country. When declaring such funds, individuals are required to disclose the source of the money.

The seizure comes amid a major government crackdown on individuals selling dollars at rates exceeding the officially sanctioned exchange rate.

As part of this broader initiative, the government is also conducting a special operation to identify foreigners engaged in illegal business activities. Authorities have warned that legal action will also be taken against Maldivians who facilitate or assist undocumented expatriates in these activities.
