Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih has been sacked as the head of the Homicide and Death Investigation Unit.

A reliable source confirmed to Adhadhu that Samih was removed from the post and transferred to a different department on Monday. It is not clear which department he was transferred to.

The family of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, 21, who was found with critical injuries on the rooftop of a warehouse after an apparent fall from a building in Male', had earlier called for his removal from the investigation.

"...real change is hard when you’re part of the system. But you can start by sacking Mr. Samih, the police officer who repeatedly lied to us during meetings," her brother-in-law posted on X on April 28.

Samih was the lead investigator into Yumnu's fall and was the first to share details of the investigation with the press.

The police have faced immense criticism over their response following Yumnu's fall. There have been accusations of a cover-up because the case involves relatives of wealthy and politically influential figures.

Yumnu is currently receiving medical care in Malaysia. Her family has announced that her condition is improving gradually.
