Police have launched an investigation into an individual accused of calling President Mohamed Muizzu a hypocrite and an apostate.

The investigation targets Ahmed Faiz of Pink House, Seenu Feydhoo. He has been summoned to appear at the police station today at 11:30 am.

Police allege that Faiz made the remarks during a protest organized by the opposition People’s National Front (PNF) on May 2. The demonstration reportedly took place in the Artificial Beach area of Male'.

"Ahmed Faiz is accused of speaking in a manner that violates public social standards by referring to the President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as an apostate and a hypocrite," the police summons sent to Faiz stated.

While the police are investigating this case, similar accusations are frequently made against political opponents by individuals aligned with the government. However, the police have not initiated investigations into any of those cases.

In addition to Faiz, the police are also investigating Ahmed Asif, a lawyer and PNF Senate member, for alleged Qazf (an Islamic criminal charge of falsely accusing someone of adultery) against Muizzu. It is understood that several other members of the PNF are also under investigation.

A series of protests against Muizzu have recently been held in the capital, Male'. These demonstrations were sparked by the arrest of two journalists from Adhadhu and the criminal prosecution of two others.

Mohamed Shahzan was jailed for 15 days after questioning Muizzu regarding sexual misconduct allegations, while Leevan Ali Naseer, was jailed for 10 days for reporting on a court order that prohibited public discussion of the allegations.
