One of the individuals involved in a serious collision in Hulhumalé Phase 2—caused by a motorcycle carrying three people travelling against traffic while evading police—has been identified as a suspect recently released from custody before his detention period had expired.

Police informed Adhadhu that Ahmed Uwais, who was on the motorcycle carrying three passengers, had previously been arrested for allegedly submitting a fraudulent transfer slip to a guesthouse. He had been remanded in custody for 15 days, effective October 1.

While Uwais’s detention period for the fraud case was set to expire on October 16, police told Adhadhu that he was released on October 6, before the deadline, following the conclusion of the investigation.

The court order for his detention noted that Uwais has an extensive criminal record. The court also justified his remand, stating that releasing him could threaten public safety.

A total of five people were injured in the accident. Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) confirmed that of the three victims admitted to the ward, two have been discharged. However, two others remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on ventilator support.

Sources indicate that one of the victims currently on a ventilator has suffered a brain haemorrhage.

According to the police, the motorcycle carrying three people was travelling against the flow of traffic on a one-way street at the time of the crash. Authorities also suspect the vehicle was stolen and confirmed that the operator did not possess a valid driver's license.
