Police have launched an investigation into a man who encouraged violence towards the demonstrators of the October 3 protest held in Male' by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The investigation was launched after immense public pressure because of double standards in the police agency, which people have alleged is proof of the institution's politicised nature.

In a message to the media, police said they were investigating a post by government supporter Shuaib Ali. No details were given.

"Police are taking necessary steps to clarify the information regarding the Facebook post," the message read.

Shuaib, a supporter of President Mohamed Muizzu's regime, posted a call for assault and shooting at the demonstrators.

"If the protesters violate the permission, they should be beaten down. They should also be shot," he wrote.

Following media coverage of his post, Shuaib threatened to behead the anonymous social media figure Hassan Kurusee, who exposes corruption and mismanagement.
