First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has said the government's initiative to ban social media for children under the age of 16 is a crucial step toward ensuring their protection.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of "Mashvaraa," a forum on children's rights, Sajidha highlighted that the decision to restrict social media access for minors is a measure within the government's broader framework for child safety.
"The government is taking robust measures to protect children from the dangers they face through internet resources. In this regard, the decision to restrict certain social media platforms for children under 16 is a vital step that demonstrates the priority given to their safety," she said.
She further emphasized that ensuring the safety of children must remain a top national priority, noting that these efforts must evolve and expand in tandem with global changes.
Highlighting the need for special attention to children's mental well-being, she noted that a child's safety is not limited to protection from physical harm alone.
She called upon families, the community, service providers, and state institutions to work together to establish a safe environment for children, in accordance with the Child Rights Protection Act and international standards.
