The British Deputy High Commissioner to the Maldives and a senior official from the UK’s National Counter Terrorism unit have met with the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohamed.
The meeting took place yesterday with Deputy High Commissioner Toff Wahab and Matthew Potts, the National Counter Terrorism Project and Preparedness Officer of the UK’s National Counter Terrorism unit.
According to the police, the discussions focused on the continued support provided by the United Kingdom to the Maldives Police Service in the areas of training, technical assistance, capacity building, and institutional development.
Furthermore, the police stated that the meeting touched upon potential areas for strengthening bilateral cooperation to enhance technical skills, bolster operational readiness, and further develop the police service.
Maldives-UK counter terror training for police officers
Two notable terrorist attacks have been carried out in the Maldives. A bomb blast occurred in September 2007 while there was an assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed in May 2021.
The United Kingdom has a history of supporting the capacity building of the Maldivian police. Last year, specialized counter-terrorism training was conducted for Maldivian officers under the UK government’s "International Protect and Prepare" program.
The Maldives has experienced two major terrorist attacks: a small bomb explosion in Sultan Park in September 2007, and a targeted bombing on May 6, 2021, in an assassination attempt against former President Mohamed Nasheed.
