Male' Mayor Adam Azim has become the Male' constituency president in the election held for vacancies in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Assembly.

Results obtained by Adhadhu on Friday night showed that Azim secured 617 votes while his opponent former Maafannu Hulhangu MP Mohamed Falah received 255 votes.

MDP's Male' constituency presidency was previously held by former Mayor Shifa Mohamed. The seat became vacant when Shifa left the party.

Azim joined the MDP after the presidential election in September last year. He was previously in the Jumhooree Party (JP) and had been the Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in the MDP government. Azim supported former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the presidential election.

Azim won the by-election for mayor after the former Mayor of Male' Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the presidential election. That was the biggest election victory for MDP in recent times.

The MDP suffered major defeats in the last presidential and parliamentary elections and some local council by-elections.
