The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that 4,121 individuals are eligible to vote in the upcoming by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency of the People’s Majlis.
The commission released the final voters' list today for the election scheduled for June 6.
A total of seven ballot boxes will be stationed for the Hithadhoo North election, two of which will be located in Male'.
The candidates are Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) representing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Ahmed Saeed (Sodaa) representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ruled on April 12 that MP Mohamed Sinan no longer met the constitutional requirements for a Member of Parliament. The disqualification was related to an outstanding debt that was not being settled in accordance with a court judgment.
The debt involved a MVR 5 million loan from Maldives Islamic Bank, which Sinan failed to repay as ordered. Although he settled the loan after the case was filed with the Supreme Court, the ruling resulted in the loss of his seat.
