Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis today.

Saleem secured the position with 62 votes. His opponent, Hussain Ziyad of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), received 10 votes. Two votes were declared invalid.

The election for the Deputy Speaker was conducted via secret ballot. The voting process and counting were overseen by a five-member committee.

The committee comprised Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarik, Baarashu MP Ibrahim Shujau, Huraa MP Anara Naeem, Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil, and Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru.

Saleem is one of the most experienced lawmakers currently serving in the People’s Majlis. He is also among the few MPs who have served multiple consecutive terms in the People's Majlis.

The election for a new Deputy Speaker took place following the resignation of the former Deputy Speaker, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim. He resigned shortly before a no-confidence vote, initiated by the ruling party.

The resolution submitted by PNC members to remove Nazim alleged that he had acted with political bias and attempted to create discord within the parliament.

However, in a statement released yesterday, Nazim denied the allegations made by the PNC.
