Recent promotions of police officers were decided and announced earlier this year, the Maldives Police Service said on Wednesday.

Responding to claims about promotions given to a large number of police officers despite an appeal by the President-Elect's Office to suspend the process, the police said all promotions were approved in line with regulations and procedures.

An announcement was made in April this year about the promotions, the police noted.

But the promotions were deferred at the time in order to avoid any negative inference because of the upcoming presidential election, it added.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) also instructed the police to stop the promotions.

But the Prosecutor General's office decided that the police did not need to obey the order because it had not been made with reference to any law.
