The Democrats has decided to field candidates in all constituencies in next year's parliamentary elections.

At a media briefing on Sunday, Interim Chairman Hassan Latheef said the party will continue to try and reduce the number of constituencies represented in parliament.

If the effort is unsuccessful, the party will contest for all seats, he said. The decision was made at a meeting of the party's interim council.

Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb has proposed constitutional amendments on behalf of The Democrats to reduce the number of constituencies to 76.

"Now the Elections Commission has announced that it is 93 seats. So what that means is we will contest for 93 seats. However, the work that we will do as a bigger priority is on the amendment proposed to the constitution by Ilyas Labeeb to reduce the composition of parliament," he said.

Along with the decision to field candidates in 93 parliamentary constituencies, the party also decided on Sunday to begin formulating its legislative agenda.

The decision to begin the work was made unanimously by the interim council, Hassan Latheef said.

The Democrats was formed by members who left the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) amid disagreements that arose after former President Mohamed Nasheed's defeat in the MDP's presidential primary.

As the new party's internal elections are yet to take place, the party is operated by an interim council.
