The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has established a special office within its secretariat to provide technical consultancy to island and city councils across the Maldives.
Named the "Inter-Local Council Project Development Office," the party said that the facility was created to offer technical, financial, and other forms of support and assistance to local councils.
Ibrahim Ameer, a member of the party’s National Council and the Finance Minister during the second MDP administration, has been appointed to lead the office.
The establishment of such an office was a key campaign pledge made by former President Mohamed Nasheed during his successful bid for the party’s chairmanship. During the campaign, Nasheed emphasized that the MDP could facilitate new avenues for financial assistance by providing councils with the necessary technical expertise.
This marks the second office established within the MDP secretariat by Nasheed since assuming the chairmanship. It follows the earlier creation of the "Bodu Badhalu" (Big Change) office, which is headed by Director General Hassan Latheef.
