Former President Abdulla Yameen has called on Eagle Hills to stop the Rasmalé project, stating that the venture is met with nothing but public resentment.
In a post on X, Yameen accused Eagle Hills of exploiting a Maldivian administration that has lost the support and trust of its citizens.
"Eagle Hills you are a depraved bunch exploiting a morally bankrupt regime that has lost its support with the voters. A Jewish settlement in a 100% Muslim society that cherishes the Palestinian cause showcases your hypocrisy n depravation. You are well advised to scrap ur project. We have nothing but disdain for this project," he wrote.
The government handed over the Rasmalé project without charging land acquisition fees or ground rent. Instead, the state will only receive a 10% fee from the developer’s initial sale of buildings and a 4% fee from the buyer. A 4% fee will also be applicable for every subsequent ownership transfer.
Although the government claims Rasmalé was leased for 99 years, the framework of the agreement suggests a permanent loss of the land. Under the terms, every time a property owner in Rasmalé sells their unit, a new 99-year lease period begins. Similarly, if the property is gifted, the 99-year lease resets.
The project has drawn widespread criticism from politicians, religious scholars, and the general public. Despite this, government supporters continue to actively promote both the project and Eagle Hills.
