A qualified electrician, who recently participated in an opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest against politically motivated dismissals, has been terminated from his position at STELCO.
Mohamed Masih (Marchy), who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was notified of his dismissal yesterday. The official notice sent to him did not specify a reason for his termination.
Masih is an active member of the MDP and frequently participates in party activities. He has also contested for internal party positions, a right guaranteed under the Constitution.
MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed condemned Masih’s dismissal. In a social media post, Nasheed said that the intimidation being carried out by President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration must be brought to an end.
"The MDP will put an end to this intimidation and cruelty by the increasingly unpopular Muizzu administration. President Muizzu is leading this country to the brink of a revolution," Nasheed said.
While Muizzu campaigned on a pledge to ensure that employment and dismissals remain free from political influence, more than 14 individuals have been dismissed from their jobs for political reasons so far this year.
