President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said he will retire from politics after serving a second term if elected in the September 9 presidential election.
Speaking on Raajje TV's Fashaairu program on Saturday morning, Solih said he intends to continue serving the people after retiring from politics.
"I will retire from political work. I will not have any political work after this term. But I will have some work to do for the people, volunteer work," he said.
The President said he would end his political career after a second term.
Before becoming President in 2018, Solih served five terms in Parliament as the MP for Lhaviyani atoll and MP for his home island Hinnavaru. By the end of this term, his political career will mark 30 years.
The President did not face any questions on how he would work if he failed the re-election bid, but was asked numerous questions on political work and personal life.
"Did your temperament change [when you became president]," was one of the questions.
In response to the question, Solih said the biggest change was that he could not spend as much time with his family as he used to.
“I don't have time, you know, I used to spend a lot of time with my family, especially my children,” he said.
He described the change in his life after becoming president as "being confined unexpectedly."
Solih began his political career as the MP for Lhaviyani atoll. He served five consecutive terms in the Parliament.
He was also a member of the Special Assembly and worked on the committee that drafted the new Constitution.
