Galolhu South MP Meekail Naseem has said that ordinary members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) owe no apologies to anyone.

Meekail, who is campaigning against former President Mohamed Nasheed for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson position, claimed that all the honor and prestige enjoyed by the party's leadership are the direct result of the sacrifices made by its members.

His statement follows an event in Raa Dhuvaafaru, where former Nasheed issued an apology to MDP members after being prompted by an attendee. However, Nasheed added that the party's members should also seek his forgiveness.

When asked for his perspective on Nasheed’s remarks during a meeting in Haa Alif Kelaa, Meekail stated that he does not believe MDP members have any reason to apologize to anyone, whether it be Nasheed or any other individual.

"I do not believe MDP’s general members need to apologize to anyone, including President Nasheed," he said.

Nasheed apologizes to MDP members

Former President Mohamed Nasheed apologized to Maldivian Democratic Party members for his 2023 departure, calling it a decision that caused him personal sorrow. He explained that he felt forced to leave due to a breakdown in communication with then-President Solih and the party's disciplinary actions against his political allies.

During the event in Dhuvaafaru, Nasheed issued an apology to the MDP members for his decision to leave the party in 2023.

"I also did things wrong. But I very much wish for you to apologize to me as well," Nasheed said.

Nasheed, a founding member of the MDP, left the party on June 21, 2023, following a prolonged and unresolved political rift with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

At the time, his close associates had already left the MDP to form The Democrats. Nasheed officially joined The Democrats on July 13, 2023, before eventually rejoining the MDP in June of last year.
