RDC denies embezzlement claims

The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has denied corruption allegations reported in the media about the company.

In a statement released last night, RDC said the allegations in the media about Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik 'Mookey' and Chief Financial Officer Yasir Hassan taking more than MVR 13 million from the company's Bank of Maldives account for personal use were false and baseless.

No such transaction has been made from the company's bank account, the statement assured.

RDC said neither the police nor the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has informed the company about an investigation related to the company's finances.

RDC is regularly audited and no monetary transaction or problem in violation of the company's financial policy has been noted, the company said in the statement.

"RDC has been managing the company's expenses and conducting financial transactions in accordance with Maldivian financial regulations and the company's policies. As such, we assure that there is no avenue for theft of funds, embezzlement in large sums and the transfer of money from the company's main account to the personal account or accounts of any employee," the statement read.

RDC denied media reports about the company and claimed that false allegations have been circulated to change the public perception of the company.

Despite RDC's denial, the police have confirmed that a case involving the company is under investigation.

When a journalist questioned police in a media group whether more than MVR 13 million was stolen from an RDC bank account, the police confirmed that they were investigating an "RDC-related matter" but did not provide further details.
