The Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) has launched a relief fund to assist Nepal following devastating floods in the Nepal-Tibet border region.
The flooding occurred last Wednesday after a massive landslide blocked a river, causing it to breach its banks. The disaster has claimed 626 lives so far, while the number of missing persons has surpassed 2,500.
The MRC stated that the "MRC Nepal Solidarity Fund" aims to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to those affected by the catastrophic river breach.
According to the MRC, all proceeds from the fund will be channeled to the Nepal Red Cross Society through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The Nepalese government reports that approximately 93,000 people have been affected by the flooding, with thousands of homes completely destroyed.
Rescue operations are currently underway with assistance from the Chinese and Indian governments. Rescue teams have reportedly saved 3,700 people.
Reports indicate that a large number of the missing are Hindu pilgrims who were travelling to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Some reports suggest that the number of missing tourists has reached 777.
