Ahmed Mekhael Mohamed Riyaz, the councilor for the Henveiru Central constituency, has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Male’ City Council.
With the exception of two members, the City Council is currently dominated by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Mekhael secured the nomination after winning an internal primary held by the MDP, where he received seven votes. Other contenders included Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya) of the Hulhumale’ North constituency, who received five votes, while Aishath Hana of Maafannu Central and Mohamed Rilwan Ali of Maafannu West received two votes each.
Following the primary results, Mekhael’s name was the sole nomination presented during the formal council meeting.
In addition to his role on the council, Mekhael serves as the President of the Henveiru Central constituency within the MDP’s National Congress.
