Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, has congratulated President Mohamed Muizzu on his first state visit to Pakistan last October.
The Chinese Ambassador visited the Pakistan High Commission today to meet with High Commissioner Faisal Rasool Lodhi.
In a post on X, the Pakistan High Commission stated that the Chinese Ambassador commended the success of Muizzu’s visit, highlighting the signing of 20 agreements and the commitment to strengthen bilateral trade relations.
China and Pakistan are regional rivals of India, a close partner of the Maldives. Following Muizzu’s visit to Pakistan and the signing of several agreements, India stated that it is closely monitoring these developments.
"It has been reported that agreements were signed between the two countries. We are monitoring these developments very closely and will take any necessary steps if required," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in Hindi.
Muizzu undertook his state visit to Pakistan from October 20 to 23. During the visit, the Maldives signed 20 MoUs with Pakistan. Furthermore, Pakistan briefed Muizzu on its official stance regarding the Kashmir issue.
During his stay in Pakistan, Muizzu met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The President also held discussions with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir.
Since Muizzu assumed office, India has provided $1.5 billion in loans and credit facilities to the Maldives. Additionally, India facilitated the payment of $42.8 million in interest on $200 million worth of Treasury bills issued by the Maldives.
