The court has released some of the individuals detained during a protest calling for justice for Adhadhu journalists Mohamed Shahzan and Leevan Ali Naseer.
Ten people were arrested from the protest last night. Seven were released with conditions, while three people were remanded in custody for varying periods. Those released by the court include Munaz Ali, Shujau Afeef, Ali Mushaffau, Aminath Muna, Ahmed Rameez, Amina Manike, and Ahmed Shafeeq.
The court decided on their release after finding no sufficient grounds to justify further detention. In contrast, the court granted a 10-day remand for Shammoon Jaleel (Lucas), who was also arrested during the protest. Additionally, Ali Jumaan (Dethu) was ordered to be held for five days, while Abdulla Shareef received a three-day remand.
Although the protest was conducted peacefully, police used force to arrest several participants. Protesters called for an end to the intimidation of journalists and demanded the release of jailed journalists.
While police stated that the cases of the three individuals remaining in custody are under further investigation, legal counsel have raised questions regarding the justification for their detention. Lawyers noted that the arrest and detention of individuals participating in activities protected under the right to freedom of expression is unacceptable in a democratic system.
