Hundreds of people have gathered for the "Job Thursday" protest organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to condemn the unfair dismissal of civil servants and state employees for their political views.
This marks the first major demonstration since former President Mohamed Nasheed assumed the role of MDP Chairperson. The party leadership, alongside hundreds of supporters, joined Nasheed at the forefront of the protest.
While the march commenced at Rasfannu, police blocked protesters from entering Majeedhee Magu. The crowd redirected through Ameenee Magu, stopping at various points to deliver speeches denouncing the government’s illegal actions.
The focus of tonight’s protest is the unfair dismissal of employees from State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and various government agencies. Protesters allege that these individuals are being terminated for not supporting the current administration.
According to reports, at least 12 employees have been dismissed and seven others suspended from state companies this year alone for refusing to align with the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
