Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen has decided to retire.

His request has now been sent to the President's Office.

In a message to the police executive, Naveen said he had been thinking of retiring for some time.

"Today I have decided to apply for retirement. After having this thought in my head for days, I have decided to do this today after considering about many things," Naveen wrote.

In the message, Naveen wrote that this is the most opportune time to end his term of service.

"I believe that this is the most appropriate time to complete my term of office and transfer responsibilities smoothly," he stated.

Naveen concluded his message by saying that it was a great honor for him to have the opportunity to serve the country and the police institution in that position.

According to the Police Act, if the Police Commissioner retires or is dismissed, the post will be temporarily taken over by the Deputy Police Commissioner. Farhad Fikree is currently the Deputy Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the parliament's Public Accounts Committee recently recommended the suspension of several executive level police officers, including Naveen, in connection with the POLCO corruption.

Naveen is the second Police Commissioner in Muizzu administration. Previously, the post was held by Ali Sujau. He resigned on April 26 following criticism over the investigation into the fall of Hawwa Yumn.

Before the police force was estabished as a separate institution, Naveen served in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Naveen joined the police service in 2006. He has held the posts of Head of Human Resources Department, Head of Central Operations and Head of Forensic Service Directorate.

Naveen completed higher education in law and leadership from the UK and Australia.
