Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that keeping President Mohamed Muizzu in power is a big loss to the Maldivian people.

Speaking at a press conference held today in Hulhudhoo-Meedhoo, Addu City, Nasheed asserted that the current People's National Congress (PNC) administration has failed to bring any progress to the development of Hulhudhoo. He noted that no projects have been implemented on the island, nor has any industry or business been introduced to provide sustainable prosperity.

"Consider what progress President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC government has brought to Hulhudhoo over the past three years. What projects have been executed, or what job opportunities have been created? In reality, the government's policies are causing immense harm to both the people of Hulhudhoo and the entire nation," Nasheed said.

Nasheed further highlighted that the market exchange rate for the US Dollar has risen above MVR 23, causing commodity prices to skyrocket. He noted that during his visit today, he observed price hikes of 20 to 30 percent in some shops in Hulhudhoo. He also warned that the country’s usable reserves are depleting daily, claiming there are currently insufficient dollars in the reserve to cover even two weeks of imports.

"There is no meaning or purpose in voting for the PNC. They have no policy or direction. Every change they introduce is reversed the very next day. Regarding the measures to solve the dollar crisis, they first said every tourist must exchange $500. A week later, they said 20 percent, and shortly after, they said 40 percent. None of this has materialised," Nasheed said.

Furthermore, expressing dissatisfaction over Muizzu’s recent trip to Pakistan, Nasheed said that the visit has dragged the Maldives into the disputes between India and Pakistan, posing a threat to national security. Nasheed warned that any situation detrimental to India’s security would have bitter consequences for the Maldives.

Citing these reasons, Nasheed called for Muizzu’s resignation and urged the residents of Hulhudhoo to vote for the MDP candidate, Fathimath Muneera, in the upcoming Women’s Development Committee (WDC) by-election.
