Former President and Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed, has warned that expanding military ties with Pakistan could pose a risk to the Maldives.

In a post on X, Nasheed stated that strengthening military cooperation with Pakistan would provoke concern from India and jeopardise national security. He emphasised that the Maldives should avoid becoming entangled in the rivalries of competing regional powers.

Nasheed further asserted that the policies and actions of President Mohamed Muizzu are undermining the safety and security of the Maldives.

"The security and safety of the Maldives are being compromised due to President Dr Muizzu's policies. The Maldives must not involve itself in the disputes between rival nations. Expanding military ties with Pakistan will heighten India's concerns and pose a danger to our country," Nasheed said.

During Muizzu's visit to Pakistan, a total of 20 MoUs were signed, including those related to military cooperation. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged that these MoUs be formalised into binding agreements.

Muizzu described his discussions with Prime Minister Sharif as extensive and productive. He noted that the talks concluded with a clear shared determination and vision to elevate the relationship between the Maldives and Pakistan to new heights.

Muizzu rose to power on an "India Out" platform and, upon assuming office, announced a roadmap to distance the Maldives from India. However, facing financial challenges, he has since made efforts to mend relations with New Delhi.

Following these efforts, Muizzu visited India in October 2024 to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two nations signed a comprehensive agreement on the future of bilateral relations.

The President's visit to Pakistan comes shortly after the Indian government facilitated a rollover of a 30 billion rupee currency swap for the Maldives. This financial support was provided on the same day the previous currency swap arrangement with India was due for settlement.
