Police delete English statement on late-night migrant inspections

The English statement issued by the Maldives Police Service regarding new procedures for inspecting foreign workers has "vanished" from the agency’s social media platforms.

This follows a directive from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu instructing authorities to stop and question foreigners found in public spaces or on the streets between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM.

While the police initially released statements in both Dhivehi and English to explain the enforcement, the English version was deleted earlier today without explanation despite being essential for the majority of the migrant population who do not read Dhivehi.

President Muizzu stated on social media that these measures were ordered in response to concerns that some foreigners are engaging in activities late at night that disrupt public order and contravene social standards. He emphasized that coordinated enforcement efforts between the police and relevant agencies would begin immediately to ensure legal compliance.

The move has sparked debate, with Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, a long-time advocate for workers' rights, reminded the public that migrant workers should not be treated as criminals.

Despite the deletion of the English text, the government has maintained its stance that the inspections are a necessary part of a broader effort to regulate foreign employment and identify undocumented individuals.
