The government has failed to complete projects despite exhausting the budgets for the past two years since coming to power, Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas has said.
During the debate for the proposed state budget for 2026, Abbas said the government had used MVR 110 billion for last year and this year, but many projects in his constituency had been suspended.
"My concern is the budget of MVR 110 billion. By the end of 2024 and 2025, no project in any of the three islands in my constituency has been completed," he complained.
The Velidhoo constituency includes Velidhoo, Fohdhoo and Lhohi. Abbas said some projects had started and stalled.
He said the Fohdhoo harbour work was ongoing at "snail speed" while this current government has neglected the 85 percent complete sewerage work started by the previous government.
"The government has started many projects in Velidhoo. The foundation of the hospital has been laid. We do not see any further work being done there," Abbas said.
The MP said the country as a whole is experiencing an economic slowdown and businesses have gone bankrupt.
"The 2026 budget looks positive, but I have no hope that the budget will be implemented based on what was done in 2024 and 2025," Abbas said.
The government proposed a budget of MVR 64.2 billion for next year. The finance ministry expects revenue of MVR 43 billion next year and expenditure of MVR 57 billion.
