The People’s Majlis has decided not to hold its scheduled sitting today without providing a reason for the cancellation.
While parliamentary sittings are typically held from Monday through Wednesday, no session was included on today's agenda.
In a post on X, Hulhumale' South MP Ahmed Shamheed said that the Secretariat had failed to disclose why a sitting was not scheduled for today.
Shamheed further noted that, according to information available to him, no sittings are expected to take place for the remainder of the week. He described this as closing the parliament in a way that obstructs the parliamentary duty to hold the government accountable.
Article 47 of the Standing Orders of the People’s Majlis mandates that, unless a special circumstance arises or the parliament decides otherwise, sittings must be held at least three days a week during the session.
This follows a similar event in April, where more than a month passed without a parliamentary sitting. At that time, the Secretariat declined to provide a reason for the lack of scheduled sessions.
