Maavashu MP Ahmed Shakir has requested that the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation, Mohamed Afief Hussain, be summoned before the Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee over the electricity crisis in Laamu Hithadhoo.
In a letter addressed to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Shakir urged the SOE Committee to investigate the matter by summoning the Fenaka MD, noting that the ongoing power issues in Hithadhoo are a matter of concern directly impacting the livelihoods of residents.
Shakir said that since the beginning of this year, the residents of Hithadhoo have been working to bring the issue to the government's attention in hopes of finding a permanent solution to the island's power supply disruptions.
He further noted that with two out of the island's three generators currently out of service, residents are facing hardship due to power outages occurring every 30 minutes. He criticized the government’s failure to resolve the situation.
"This issue has caused disruptions to daily life, and expensive household electronic appliances are sustaining damage. It is with deep regret I note that no effective solution has been provided to date," Shakir said.
Shakir requested the Speaker to instruct the Chair of the SOE Committee to convene a meeting as soon as possible and to schedule a hearing on the matter urgently.
Power outages continue to affect several islands where Fenaka Corporation provides electricity services. Public complaints regarding the utility provider's inability to resolve these issues are on the rise.
