Police have continued to assault journalists protesting against the government's proposed legislation intending to control freedom of speech and expression in the Maldives.
Police officers were seen pushing down protesters and stepping on their bodies. Protesters sustained multiple injuries, while some had their clothes torn off and media equipment damaged.
Journalists were pushed back from outside the parliament building, but are continuing their efforts against the draconian bill. A parliament sitting was scheduled for 4:00 pm, but MPs have not received the agenda.
The bill was proposed by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru who sits in the parliament as an independent MP. But the government has been actively promoting the bill with a disinformation campaign about its provisions.
