Police grabbed Ahmed Aaidh by the neck during the protest this morning.

Journalists, including Adhadhu's Ahmed Aaidh and Mohamed Shahzan, have received death threats from anonymous social media accounts.

An account named 'shaithoanu' posted the death threat against Aaidh at 11:20 am. The threat was in response to Aaidh's remarks about the police assault on protesters this morning.

Death threats were also made against Adhadhu's Shahzan and Senior Associate Editor of Dhauru Ahmed Naif.

Other journalists protesting against the government's media control bill have also received threats, including criminal charges and threats of dismissal from jobs, targeting family members.

Adhadhu's CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa was also threatened last week. The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) called on the police to investigate it.

The parliament is preparing to approve the draconian media control bill after kicking out a petition of concern signed by 150 journalists.
