The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has decided not to participate in the draft stage of the national development plan.
In a press release, the largest opposition party said it does not believe President Mohamed Muizzu would implement the plan.
"This party believes in the importance of a long-term national development plan. But we are extremely concerned about the government's actions while preparing for the draft stage," it stated.
MDP noted that the decision to formulate the national development plan for 20 years was taken without any consultation.
The party also questioned why the government was continuing to announce new projects without planning and suspending ongoing projects.
"The government is working to reclaim Fushidhiggaru lagoon without completing other ongoing reclamation projects near Male'. The government is also announcing to abolish atoll councils and relocate island populations," MDP stressed.
"Therefore, this party does not see the point of formulating a plan. And we do not believe the government has good intentions."
The party further expressed concern as the government has not complied with the constitution, laws and good governance principles.
