The governments of the Maldives and India today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide equipment for the establishment of fitness and recreation centres in three islands, funded by a grant from the Indian government.

This project is being implemented under the "High Impact Community Development Projects" (HICDP) scheme, supported by India's grant assistance.

At a special ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry, the MoU was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. The Indian government was represented by the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian.

Additionally, the implementing agency was represented by the Youth Minister Abdulla Rafiu.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Rafiu stated that these centres would provide island residents with an accessible environment for exercise and foster community ties.

"This initiative will increase opportunities for people of all ages, particularly women and youth, to participate in sports and recreational activities, thereby promoting the overall well-being of island communities," the Minister said.
