President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that every Maldivian citizen in the Male' region above the age of 18 will get a confirmation of their "first home" this year.
In an interview with the state broadcaster, Muizzu said construction to achieve this target will commence within the year.
"We will open the opportunity to submit applications and we will officially give them a letter of confirmation," he said.
President Muizzu added that the aim is to ensure that no one over the age of 18 is homeless in the Malay area.
Noting that 57 more housing projects have been announced, Muizzu said bids for the projects will be accepted after the Eid holidays.
In January, the Finance Ministry opened for bids for the construction of 12,000 housing units in 57 islands across the country.
MVR 1.5 billion was allocated in the state budget for this year for nationwide housing projects.
Solving the housing problem by providing flats and homes within the current five-year term is a presidential pledge.
