The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asian Affairs, Paul Kapoor, met with President Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday.
During the meeting held at the President's Office, the two officials noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Maldives.
Kapoor expressed the United States' interest in enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual concern, including economic development, increasing investment opportunities, and maritime security in the Maldives.
Muizzu expressed his gratitude for these initiatives and assured that the Maldives welcomes U.S. assistance in alignment with the nation's foreign policy.
Prior to his meeting with Muizzu, Kapoor also met with Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam.
Meanwhile , the Maldives Police Service recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to combat major transnational crimes.
Since the current administration took office, security cooperation with the United States has expanded significantly. In addition to the police, the U.S. continues to provide assistance to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), with high-ranking U.S. officials making frequent visits to the Maldives.
