A foreign teacher accused of assaulting a student and injuring his finger has been taken into police custody.
Police said the Indian teacher was arrested with a court warrant on Tuesday morning. They did not disclose the duration of his remand.
The injured student from Thaa Kandoodhoo island school was provided medical assistance.
Officials from the Education Ministry did not respond to calls from Adhadhu. But the ministry has made comments defending the teacher to other local media outlets.
The student's father told Adhadhu that the teacher fled after the incident and that doctors have found a fracture in his child's finger bone.
The father said another teacher contacted him during the interval break to inform him about the injury.
He accused the school management of failing to protect his child and secretly getting the teacher off the island.
He further said the education ministry has not yet contacted the family to find out information about the incident which happened on Monday.
But he stressed that the family had voluntarily phoned the ministry to provide information.
The father complained that his child was being revictimized because of the ministry's comments. He also complained about bullying in school, with classmates calling his child a liar.
Several similar cases surfaced recently, including an assault on a student who had undergone brain surgery.
An autistic child was also assaulted during a therapy session. Two foreign workers were arrested in connection with the case.
