The Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the state-owned company that owns the land in Hulhumale', has obstructed the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from holding a rally tonight.
In a post on X, the MDP said HDC has decided not to allow the party to hold a rally in Hulhumale' tonight.
"It is clear that this is a direct attempt by the government to obstruct peaceful political activities," the main opposition party said.
Tonight’s rally was scheduled to take place at the No. 1 Ruhgandu area in Hulhumale'. The meeting was scheduled to start at 8:30 pm.
Many political, business and entertainment activities are usually held in the No. 1 Ruhgandu area.
HDC has not yet commented on the matter.
MDP is holding also weekly rallies across the Male' region in order to prepare for a massive rally planned for January 31.
