The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has pardoned all those who faced disciplinary action in the past.

The decision was made at the party's national council meeting held on January 8. The proposal was made by MDP Naifaru constituency President Abdulla Rasheed Hassan.

The party's Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed told Adhadhu that the decision was made to provide the opportunity to all those who want to work with the MDP.

"The decision was taken to give the opportunity to all those who want to work with the party as the MDP is currently in opposition," he said.

"Currently, there are no MDP members facing disciplinary action," he added.

The decision comes at a time when political figures who had left the party and worked for The Democrats are returning to the MDP.

Some MDP members were previously banned from contesting any internal elections and expelled from the party.

Ali Azim, who left the Democrats and rejoined MDP on Sunday, was also banned from contesting any internal elections for five years.

However, with the decision of the national council, he will also be allowed to contest in the internal elections of the MDP.
