The Cabinet has decided to take over the Olhu Hiyaa pet care facility built by the Male' city council and hand it over to the Animal Welfare Ministry.
Male' Mayor Adam Azim said the Cabinet sent a letter on Tuesday as the city council prepared to remove stray cats from the streets of Male'.
"They stopped us from taking the stray cats to the facility. The council spent to establish the facility. But now we have got a letter to hand over the facility to the Animal Welfare Ministry," he told Adhadhu.
He said the letter would be submitted to a city council meeting on Wednesday and accused the government of obstructing the city council's work.
He added that the city council would hold discussions with the Animal Welfare Ministry regarding the MoU for the facility.
The pet care facility was opened recently on a 5000 square feet land in Hulhumale Phase 2 provided to the council by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
Meanwhile, in a statement on Wednesday, the Animal Welfare Ministry stopped the transfer of stray cats to the facility and said the facility was not fully ready.
