Lawyer Ali Naseer Gasim has been appointed as the President’s representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), the constitutional body tasked with overseeing judicial conduct.
The letter of appointment was presented to Ali Naseer Gasim during a ceremony held at the President’s Office today. His appointment follows the resignation of Yazmeed Mohamed, who previously served as the President’s member on the commission.
Ali Naseer Gasim formerly served as the legal counsel for the Male’ City Council during President Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as Mayor. He was the signatory on the controversial agreement regarding the subleasing of the Male’ Fish Market land.
As Muizzu maintains firm control over the JSC, Ali Naseer Gasim becomes the third individual appointed as the President’s member to the commission during the current administration’s term.
The administration’s first appointee to the post was Mohamed Sameer. Following his removal, Yazmeed Mohamed was appointed to the JSC on February 23 last year. At the time of his resignation, Yazmeed held the position of Vice President of the commission.
Yazmeed’s resignation comes amid serious allegations of exerting undue influence over the judiciary. Sources informed Adhadhu that Yazmeed had allegedly contacted judges regarding ongoing court cases, requesting them to rule in specific ways.
