An opposition activist has been summoned to the police in connection with a social media post that allegedly caused public fear.
Hussain Shafiu was asked to appear before the police to provide a statement at 1:30 pm on Sunday.
According to the summons, the investigation is connected to a post published on X on November 8. Police said he had used obscene language to create fear.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail expressed concern in a social media post and wrote that criticizing the government has become a crime.
"Dictators will always silence the people and prevent them from expressing their views. Opinions and thoughts cannot be locked," he stated.
Fayyaz also slammed the government for taking measures against local councillors who do not support the government.
Last week, the Local Government Authority (LGA) ordered an investigation into alleged defamatory remarks made by Gaaf Dhaal Gadhdhoo island council President.
Ahmed Mohamed was accused of slandering President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and senior government officials in a council WhatsApp group.
Police also seized the mobile phone of a Maldivian national for allegedly photographing Muizzu inside a shopping mall during his unofficial visit to Singapore in August.
