The police have launched a serious investigation after a video showed a boy being bullied in a mosque in Alif Alif Rasdhoo island.
The video which began circulating on social media last night showed a boy being bullied in the ablution area of a mosque in Rasdhoo island.
In a post on X, Homeland Minister Ali Ihusan said the video has come to the attention of the police.
“I will ensure that the strictest action is taken against those who commit such acts in the society,” Ihusan wrote.
Police Commissioner Ali Shujau wrote on X that the information received so far suggests that the incident took place in Alif Alif Rasdhoo.
He added that the police were "treating the matter as a very serious case."
The video has now been deleted from some social media platforms. Police have also appealed not to circulate the disturbing video.
"Maldives Police Service urge the public refrain from sharing the video of the incident," police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said.
Police said they were working with relevant authorities to provide psychological assistance to the bullying victim.
The two boys, accused of assaulting the victim, are aged 13 and 14, police said.
The matter has now been referred to the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament.
Meanwhile, a team comprising officials from the Social and Family Development Ministry, the Department of Juvenile Justice and the police is currently working in Rasdhoo to investigate the matter.
