A man arrested for intoxication and causing repeated public nuisance has escaped after being transferred to a National Drug Agency (NDA) facility for treatment.

The individual, identified as Ahmed Fairish, had previously spent 15 days in custody earlier this year for allegedly issuing a death threat to another person.

"Fairish was transferred under police supervision to the NDA centre in Himmafushi for treatment. Police received information that he escaped from the facility's custody this afternoon," the police said in a message to the media.

Authorities have not yet located him.

His most recent arrest occurred on October 17. He was taken into custody while a member of the public was conducting a hunger strike at a police station, demanding protection from the suspect's ongoing harassment.
