The assault of Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem is under investigation as an attempted murder, the PG office has said.
A PG office senior official told Adhadhu that the investigation was now in the duty prosecution stage with the involvement of prosecutors.
The case was under investigation as an assault with the intent to murder Shameem, the official said.
"The attack was made with the intent to kill him. The investigation is proceeding at the moment as an attempted murder," the official said.
Shameem was attacked on January 31 as he tried to enter his home after parking his motorcycle. He sustained a bone fracture on his left forearm after he was struck with a hammer. The ADK hospital placed the arm in a plaster after treating the injury.
Seven suspects have been arrested in the case so far. All of the suspects were detained for trial.
Shameem was assaulted by two masked men, police said previously. The two suspects were detained on the day after the attack.
Adhadhu understands that the first two suspects taken into custody belonged to a gang in Male'. The number plate of their cycle had been changed for the attack and the suspects wore helmets and masks to conceal their faces, a source with knowledge of the incident told Adhadhu.
