Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has announced that he will contest to become the President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
In a post on his official X account, Shahid said he would like to ask for the support and cooperation of MDP members.
“With new enthusiasm, the MDP must come out with more strength and join hands to take the Maldives back in the direction the people want,” Shahid wrote.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed was the MDP's President till June 21, 2023. Following his resignation from the party, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was appointed as the interim President by the MDP national council.
As one of the closest ministers to President Solih in the last MDP government, Shahid played important roles in the MDP leadership.
The MDP said in an announcement that applications for the post of party President can be submitted before 2:00 pm on February 20.
